and its Topographical Others
Sections: Project Description
For "Primary and Other Remote Locations"
(2005, Aug 12th-15th, 2K5, Box Elder County Utah, USA) the South East corner of CLUI's
Remote Location property on Lemay Island was used as an input point. (Follow
this
link for more info on the site.)
A view of the Remote Location (the first Utah property purchased by Robert Smithson and Nancy Holt),
from the perspective of the SE corner property boundary. 12 T 261180 4558380 (NAD 27) Utilizing the
C5 Landscape Database API 2.0a, a database
containing topographical data for the surrounding area (including Lemay Island, Floating Island
and the Silver Island mountain range which includes Crater Island) was searched, seeking points with
similar topographical characteristics.
Input and output from the C5 Landscape Database. See
FindSimilar.java
for the source code. The database search isolated five topographical others of the CLUI Remote
Location; or as we call them, the "Other Remote Locations". It is important to note
that the algorithm seeks the most similar topography, not yet the most similar
viewshed. The most interesting azimuth from which to select a view was chosen
by Paula from the perspective of the location selected by the database. For
an understanding of what the algorithm produces, note that each site is a
few hundred meters from the "shoreline", as is the CLUI remote location SE corner.
If we had run the algorithm against a point representing a hill top, all of the most
similar hilltops would have been discovered. The "Other Remote Locations" were
visited with the help of GPS, four wheel drive, a
23 kilometer hike (8/13/2K5) and a
9 kilometer hike (8/15/2K5).

elevation in the area.

with the primary goal of producing landscape paintings in which agency of site selection,
often assumed to be the natural province of the painter, is turned over to the C5 algorithm
digesting the landscape data through pattern matching.
Paula implemented preliminary sketches of the landscape at each site.
field work The database literally told us where
to go, and from where Paula should paint the landscape.
